Frequently Asked Questions

How much will my solar system cost?

The final cost of your solar system will vary depending on the size of your home and your energy needs, but the items that make up the cost of your system include: solar panels, inverter, mounting equipment and installation labor. In general, residential solar costs between $2.50 and $4.50 per watt of installed capacity.

We’ll work on a solution for you that costs less each month than what you are paying for electricity now. And with rates increasing each year, you’ll be paying less over time. You can pay cash, or work with us to arrange financing. We’ll show you the best options.

Our Energy Advisors will show your individual return on investment for your proposed system.

Will my system be free through government programs?

We will design a system, and provide financing with no down payment. Your total cost for electricity will be reduced on day 1, and drastically reduced in the future, as you pay off your system, and the cost of conventional electricity continues to increase.

There are many federal, state and local programs and tax incentives that make this possible. Our SunSourcers will explain it all in detail. Talk to us today!

How much should I expect to save?

You will save money in a variety of ways.

You’ll experience immediate, monthly savings, estimated between 10 – 50% per month off your total cost of electricity. This savings will increase over time, as you pay down the financing and more important as the cost of conventional electricity increases.

Long term savings are estimated to be $30,000 to potentially $100,000, depending on what happens with your utility over the long term. Utility infrastructures are old, and their required upgrades will be very expensive to consumers over the long term.

And don’t forget, your solar system will be an asset that increases the value of your home.

Will I still receive an electricity bill after I have solar panels?

The specifics of net metering programs, available incentives, and electricity rates vary depending on your location and utility company. In general, if your solar system is appropriately sized, generates enough electricity to meet your needs, and you have access to net metering or energy storage, it is indeed possible to eliminate or significantly reduce your electric bill.

Our energy advisors will walk you through the programs in your area and estimate the savings on your monthly bill.

What is Net Metering?

Net metering is a policy where the utility company pays or credits you for the excess electricity your solar panels produce and send back to the grid. Each state has its own policy for net metering. Our energy advisors will explain the program in your area.

Is this like having energy insurance?

Yes! You have health insurance. You have auto insurance, and property insurance, and even life insurance. This is like insurance for your electricity––energy insurance.

And the best part is, you get the benefit of insurance with no premium.

How long will it take for my system to be installed?

Most systems take 6 – 8 weeks from the time we finalize your price to your system is installed, and then another few weeks for inspection and approval to be turned on.

And unlike other companies, we are with you the entire time, from system selection to operation. We’re with you until you flip the switch!

Does rooftop solar damage my roof?

When properly installed by experienced professionals, rooftop solar systems do not typically cause damage to the roof. In fact, solar panels can offer some level of protection to the underlying roof surface.

It’s crucial to work with reputable installers, assess the roof’s condition beforehand, and ensure regular maintenance to promote a safe and efficient solar installation. These are all things we include in our program. In addition, all of our installer partners carry roof warranties of at minimum 10 years. Talk to our Energy Advisors today to learn more.

How can I tell if my roof will accommodate solar panels?

To know for sure you’ll need to have an assessment of your roof done by a professional. They will check for these things: orientation and tilt, total area, age and condition, material, and local permits and regulations.

Our process includes a roof assessment, and our energy advisors can usually tell you over the phone if your roof is compatible based on your description.

What kind of maintenance will my system require?

Solar systems don’t generally require maintenance because there are no moving parts. Just like anything, they perform best when they are kept clean. Cleaning your system is as simple as rinsing it with a hose a few times each year.

Will my solar system work on cloudy days?

Modern solar panels are designed to be efficient even under cloudy conditions. They can still capture a portion of the sunlight’s energy and convert it into usable electricity. The overall power output will be higher on blue sky days, but you’ll still get plenty of electricity on cloudy days.

If you live in a particularly cloudy climate your energy advisor may recommend a battery as part of your system, which will store excess power you generate during blue sky days.

How long will my solar system last?

Overall, residential solar systems are expected to have a productive lifespan of 25 to 30 years, with the potential for the panels to continue generating electricity beyond that timeframe.

How much does it cost to maintain a solar system?

Solar panels generally require minimal maintenance due to their durability and lack of moving parts. Maintenance mainly involves keeping the panels clean and free of debris, which the rain often takes care of. SunSource has a minimum warranty of 10 years for workmanship and 25 years from manufacturers.

What happens during a power outage? Will I have power?

Because your system will be connected to the grid, will automatically shut off if the power goes out. This is for safety reasons, to protect utility workers who may be working on power lines during an outage. But if your system has battery storage, you’ll be able to access your stored power during an outage to power essential areas in your home.
